what is mediation?

Why do you ask? Do you want a method, a system to practice? You see, the moment you practice meditation, it is no longer meditation. When there is a meditator meditating, there is division, conflict - and that is not meditation at all. Meditation is not something you do. It is not concentration, not control, not achieving some experience or state. All that is the activity of thought trying to become something. Meditation is the seeing of what is, without the observer. When the mind is completely quiet - not made quiet, not disciplined into silence - when it is quiet because it has understood its own movement, then perhaps there is that state. But the moment you seek it, pursue it, you've lost it.
