Why is meditation so difficult when sitting still seems simple?
Why is meditation so difficult when sitting still seems simple?

Sitting still is simple? That is where you are mistaken, my friend.
Your body can sit... yes, even a rock can sit. But you? You have never sat still in your life. You have been running for lifetimes. Your body may be on the cushion, but your mind is in the marketplace, in the bedroom, in yesterday, in tomorrow... everywhere except here.
The difficulty is not meditation. The difficulty is you.
You have been trained from childhood to be occupied, busy, productive. You have been taught that doing is valuable, being is worthless. Now suddenly I tell you to just sit... and the whole conditioning rebels. The mind says, "What nonsense! I should be doing something important, making money, becoming somebody."
And what happens? You sit for two minutes and the mind screams, "I am bored! This is torture!"
This is beautiful! For the first time you are seeing what you have become... a madhouse. Thoughts rushing like traffic with no traffic police. And you think sitting still is simple?
The simplicity comes later, when you stop fighting with the mind. When you just watch the circus without buying a ticket to join it. Then suddenly... silence happens. Not because you achieved it, but because you stopped disturbing it.
